Disability is an added value, not an exception
Let us say it clearly: in AI Calabria, people with disabilities contribute as equals and often bring something more—a genuine added value. We do not treat them differently or place them on a separate path: they work alongside everyone else, on the same entries, with the same weight, and often do the work exceptionally well.
For the work we do—preserving a language word by word and sound by sound—some abilities the world calls different are exactly the ones we need.
A dialect Atlas is built with memory, a keen ear, patience and attention to details that almost everyone else misses. That is why many forms of disability can become a tangible advantage here.
A gaze that refuses boundaries
He sees it in eyes that light up when something truly reaches him. He sees it in a smile that can stop you in your tracks and, for a moment, make every word others use to explain him unnecessary.
He does not want his son to be described as a limitation overcome. He wants him to have the freedom to surprise, choose, contribute and leave a mark in his own way, at his own pace and with his own strength.
Do not look only at what you were told to see. Stay long enough to discover what makes him shine.
Where others see a difference
No diagnosis tells the whole story of a person. These are not labels, but possibilities. In AI Calabria they become real tasks, visible contributions and value left to one’s territory.

AUTISM
An intense, precise relationship with words, letters, sounds and patterns. An eye that spots a variant from a single town, an ear that recognises the same pronunciation months later, a memory that retains a form heard only once. Where precision matters and no detail can be lost, this may be exactly the right mind.
Blindness and low vision
When sight is not dominant, listening can become extraordinarily refined. Those who rely on hearing notice the intonation, rhythm and cadence of speech. This is the hardest part to put into writing and the most precious to preserve. Pronunciations, the audio heart of the Atlas, need exactly this kind of listening.
Deafness and Deaf culture
Language is not only sound. People who communicate through their eyes and hands bring unique attention to form, gesture and the way meaning is conveyed. The Calabria of minorities and sign languages is also memory, to be preserved alongside everything else.
Motor disabilities
When movement is difficult, words often remain the freest territory. Many people with motor disabilities safeguard an immense linguistic heritage of proverbs, stories and vocabulary from trades that no longer exist. Here, that heritage matters more than any journey.
Intellectual disabilities
The connection to the language of one’s roots, to a phrase learned in childhood, a chant or a family expression can remain vivid and direct. It is authentic language, neither filtered nor corrected towards Italian—the very language the Atlas seeks and that is lost elsewhere.
No special track
We have not built a special track. Contributors work on the same content, leave their name on the entry they preserve, enter their municipality’s rankings and help their Team grow. Like everyone else, because they are like everyone else.
Everyone works on the same content with the same tools.
